Etta James Suffering From Dementia While She Battles Leukemia, Family Fights Over Control Of Her Finances
We hope that her family is spending as much time with her during this period of her life as they are worrying about control of her finances.
Singer Etta James has been revealed to be suffering from dementia and undergoing treatment for leukemia, according to court documents in a civil case in Riverside County Superior Court regarding her husband, Artis Mills, who wants more control of her finances than her will allows.
The papers reveal that the 72-year-old is being treated for her conditions with full-time care at her Woodcrest home, where she requires assistance with meals, dressing and hygiene. She can no longer sign her name, but she does still recognize her husband and children.
As of now, her will, written in 2008, gives her sons, Donto and Sametto James, as will as the former's wife Christy, power of attorney, which Mills is now challenging, and asking that he can move just over $1 million from three of her accounts into a joint account with him, or to him alone.
He also wants the power to close the accounts and transfer the money in his name, so he can keep supporting his wife's full care treatment at home, because as he states in the documents, James expressed that "if she ever became disabled, she did not wish to be placed in an institutional nursing facility as long as they had the money to keep her at home."
Meanwhile, Donto has responded in a court declaration that he has no problem with the money being released for her care, but he would prefer that the transfers be overseen by a third party, "to avoid present and future family conflict and discrepancies."
A hearing will take place later today to discuss the matter further.
We think that her son has the right idea!
Something about all of this makes us SLIGHTLY uncomfortable, but hopefully everything can resolved amicably, with the focus remaining on Etta's wellness and comfort during this truly sad time.
You're in our thoughts, bb.
