James Cameron To Dive To The Deepest Part Of The Ocean

James Cameron is not only an amazingly talented filmmaker, he's also crazy.

He is planning to dive to the bottom of the Mariana trench, the deepest point in the whole ocean.

And no, he's not funding some adrenaline-junkie scientists, he's going himself.

He wants to find out what's at the bottom of the 36,000ft deep trench. That's over 6.8 miles down!!

The pressure there is over 8 tons per square inch.

That's why he's crazy. Best of luck, Mr. Cameron.

New Species Of Lizard Discovered!

lizards-new-pseic-found.jpg

Researchers in the Andes have discovered a brand new lizard species.

It is a semi-aquatic reptile, named Potamites montanicola and it can grow to about 2.5 inches long.

Lizards aren't warm blooded, so they need a heat source, like the sun, a warm rock, or warm animal, to warm their blood and stay alive.

What is confusing scientists is that these lizards somehow are surviving in the cold Andes mountains.

After researchers spotted only one and they realized that it looked so different from other species in the area that it might be a new species, so they began an immediate search.

A researcher said:

"During the day we didn't find any, but at night we found several individuals, males and females, running and swimming in the stream.

That was a great moment for us."

They have found and photographed them but they still need to answer the question of how the lizards can survive when the mountain temperature drops to about 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit at night.

For now, all we can say is, welcome to the world of classified species, Potamites montanicola.

Not Only Is Shark Fin Soup Cruel… It May Be Toxic

shark-great-white-jumping.jpg

Shark fin soup is a cruel dish made by catching sharks, cutting their fins off, then tossing them back into the sea.

So not only is this meal crazy cruel, it's also potentially really dangerous.

We're surprised the secret service let Obama get so close to shark fin soup.

Remember when we previously mentioned he got take out from a San Fran restaurant that still served shark fin soup?

Anyway, scientists analyzed shark fins from Florida and found

Ocean Plankton Might Decide The Future Of Earth's Climate

plankton-control-climate-change.jpg

Tiny little organisms called phytoplankton have a huge impact on Earth's climate.

They are single celled algae and they can soak up 45 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year!!

They provide half of the Earth's oxygen supply.

These creatures have trouble growing in parts of the ocean with low iron concentrations, which is about 30% of the ocean, therefore making it hard for the ocean to absorb more carbon dioxide.

Thankfully there are scientists looking into this, and how it can affect climate change.

One of the scientists explained:

Genius Chimp Solves Puzzle In Half A Second

This is ridiculous.

Scientists have given this chimp a short term memory test.

And he can remember where ten numbers were after only seeing them for half a second!

Yes, that means this chimp can count and understands the order of numbers.

Peaceful Animal Rights Protests On The Rise In Britain

Protestors

Even though only 3% of the population in Britain is vegetarian, they sure are animal lovers.

Over the past 6 years, illegal attacks (some bordering on terrorism) have declined significantly to almost none at all, as peaceful protesting has been on the rise.

They might have realized the extremists were taking things a bit too far after a 2004 grave-robbing.

Gross.

Even though Britain banned testing cosmetics on animals there were still about 3.7 million animal tests performed in 2010.

Regardless of how peaceful the protests are, police are still advising research facilities to up their security, just in case the extremists decide to pop up again.

What seems stupid to us, is that scientists dislike using animals just as much as we do; animal testing is expensive and the results aren't always reliable. The problem is there are no reliable alternatives.

Maybe scientists should spend their time creating alternative testing methods instead of torturing animals.

Scientists 95% Sure They've Found Proof Yeti Exist

Big Foot

Scientist say they may have found Yeti living in the Kemerovo region of Siberia, Russia.

The Yeti or Abominable Snowman or Big Foot has been a fabled creature for decades, with many giant footprints, long strange hairs on trees and blurry photographs fueling the myth.

Now science has taken over what the crackpots couldn't finish. They plan to prove the existence of the Yeti.

A Russian news report said that scientists:
