Pollution Is Causing Rising Mercury Levels In Arctic Animals

Oh No!

Global mercury emissions could grow by 25 percent by 2020 if no action is taken to control them, posing a threat to polar bears, whales and seals and the Arctic communities who hunt those animals for food, an authoritative international study says.

The assessment by a scientific body set up by the eight Arctic rim countries also warns that climate change may worsen the problem, by releasing mercury stored for thousands of years in permafrost or promoting chemical processes that transform the substance into a more toxic form.

"It is of particular concern that mercury levels are continuing to rise in some Arctic species in large areas of the Arctic,"

despite emissions reductions in nearby regions like Europe, North America and Russia, said the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program, or AMAP.

Emissions have increased in other parts of the world, primarily in China, which is now the world's No. 1 mercury polluter, accounting for nearly half of total emissions, AMAP said.

"Canada's Club Scene Sucks" - Ke$ha

Ke$ha hearts baby seals

Looks like unicorns aren't the only animal Ke$ha cares about.

Ke$ha and Iggy Pop have joined forces with PETA to launch a global campaign against the clubbing of baby seals.

The annual clubbing of baby seals begins this week on the ice floes of eastern Canada; this campaign aims to combat the government's attempts to market baby seal fur internationally.

In a statement Ke$ha said:

"I was lucky enough to get to watch a bunch of wild seals recently and truly fell in love with these amazing creatures. Canada gets to be host to harp seals each year during their migration to the ice to give birth which is beautiful and peaceful. But because the babies' fur is so soft, there are people who club and brutally kill these young animals. The Canadian seal slaughter is barbaric and archaic. My music and my fans are part of a movement of youth taking over the world with positive change. I know they’ll help me and PETA ban the Canadian seal slaughter so the only place you see baby seal fur is in a museum."

We whole heartedly support Ke$ha in her worthy (and surprisingly witty) campaign!

Charlie: The World's Smartest Seal

Charlie the Seal

Eat your heart out Sea World!

No one had to teach Charlie, the wild seal, that waving to tourist gets him fed.

Charlie's made a name for himself by waving at visitors who come to Howth Harbor in Ireland, where he beckons them to throw him fish, which they purchase by the bucketful nearby.

Photographer Paul Hughes said:

"He seems to have learned how to do this by imitating people. People love it — it gets him noticed and they wave back at him. And at the end of the day he gets to gobble up more fish than the other seals."

He may be a star attraction to people there, but Charlie's buddies are sick of his cheap tricks.

"Sometimes they get quite jealous of his catch and will give him a little bite on the head. But he can just carry on waving without a care in the world."

Hah! So adorbz!

TeddyHilton.com Honored With PETA's Proggy Award!

Perez Is Awarded "Proggy" by PETA

We are truly humbled!

Earlier today PETA posted this on their website:

Perez Hilton, a distinguished veteran of PETA's "Best-Dressed" list, now has a new jewel for his crown—a PETA Proggy Award. His website TeddyHilton.com (named for his canine buddy) covers all things furry, scaly, and feathery, delivered with the same sass and pizzazz that Perez is known for over at PerezHilton.com. "Teddy" talks turkey about amazing animals, animal rights victories, and compassionate celebrities.

We've been fans of the faux-fur–flaunting phenom for some time. When he learned about the barbaric clubbing of baby seals in Canada, he spoke out for the cause in our "Save the Seals" T-shirt (looking very dashing, we might add).

During Perez's photo shoot, he told us, "Everyone in their own small ways can help make the lives of animals better—on a daily basis." He and Teddy certainly are.

Congrats, Perez and Teddy! And as you would say, We Love U, BB.

Thank you SO MUCH!

We do it because we do believe that all animals should be treated with compassion!

That's something EVERYONE can agree on!

Fur Seals Bludgeoned To Death In New Zealand

So sad… Over 20 defenseless fur seals were bludgeoned to death on a New Zealand coastline.

Attackers most likely used bats or clubs to kill the seals, including eight pups just a few days old.

Government officials are taking the matter seriously and are determined to prosecute those involved.

Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson revealed:

"To go around and club 23 seals to death over a number of days is very deliberate and you have to question the state of mind of someone who can carry out such a cruel and abhorrent attack.”

The attack took place at Ohau Point colony which is a breeding ground for the seals, but unfortunately, 13 breeding females were killed and another 13 pups depending on their mother’s milk would die.

New Zealand law states that the harming or killing of any fur seals or marine animals has a charge of $191,000 or up to six months in jail.

Let’s hope they catch the awful people who did this!!!

Seals Put On The Endangered Species List

Since there are two species of seals that depend on sea ice to survive, the federal government has decided to place these two species on the endangered species list.

There have been major climate change going on, which in turn melts the sea ice.

Even though, Ringed seals, one of the species, have a large population, the entire population is dependent on sea ice, which is disappearing.

Since these seals have evolved on the ice, it is very unlikely that they will be able to survive on the shore. It is too much of a change for them to get used to so quickly.

It is not only seals that are being effected by the climate changing, so let's do what we can to help!!
