The state health department has acknowledged a huge screw up on their part after a pregnant mental patient was refused the proper resources necessary to deliver her baby safely.
The baby now has profound brain damage, and could be on a ventilator for the rest of his life.
A report from the inspector general of the Department of Children & Families reported that the 34-year-old woman, who was being held in Florida's largest mental hospital, became increasingly frantic to get medical care for her baby and called 911 twice.
Here's what she said to the operator:
“There’s nobody here that can help me right now, and I’m pregnant."
The emergency dispatcher asked to speak with the hospital caregiver who said:
“She says she’s going into labor; she’s not going into labor … Can’t send her nowhere right now."
The unidentified patient has schizophrenia. Her family, regarding the baby, said:
“He is not doing well. He is on life support.”
The state health services released a report that said the mental hospital took several missteps which resulted in the baby's subsequent severe brain damage.
Here what those "missteps" were:
"1. The hospital thought the woman wasn't due to deliver for another month or two.
2. The staff did not check the patient's blood pressure which was extremely fluctuated and should've served as a red flag.
3. The woman was given psychiatric medicine without the consent of her father and guardian.
4. The hospital had no guidelines on how to take care of a pregnant woman.
5. The staff was understaffed, and many workers were forced to work double shifts. "
We just hope the baby is able to survive, and this serves as a wake-up call to ALL mental institutions across the country to get their shizz together and not let a preventable tragedy such as this ever happen again.
