18-year-old Joshua Wilkerson from Pearland, Texas was found dead last week and now his 19-year-old classmate Hermilio Moralez is being charged with his death.
Wilkerson was beaten to death with a large wooden rod and then his body was burned.
Authorties believe the two were friends for five years and often gave each other rides home.
"While this is not the end that we had hoped for, we had to know something. They have helped us to bring a little sense of closure for us," said Laura Wilkerson, Joshua's mother.
Moralez was arrested on Tuesday after roaming near the crime scene. At first he refused to identify himself, but they admitted to hitting Wilkerson with a piece of wood he allegedly made advances towards him.
The court documents state that Wilkerson gave Moralez a ride home from school on Tuesday and the advances. Moralez got angry and claims they both got out of the truck and began to fight. He claims Wilkerson grabbed a large wooden rod and tried to hit him, but Moralez turned the tables and began to hit him with it. He said Joshua was not moving afterwards.
He then claims that he drove the body to a field and burned the body. Morales then drove Wilkerson's pickup truck to the parking lot of a nearby strip mall and threw his shoes and backpack in a dumpster.
Moralez has also been charged with failure to identify and attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer. On those two charges, his bond is set for $2,000 and $30,000, respectively. No bond has been set for the murder charge.
