Score one for the Sharks!
The New York Senate has UNANIMOUSLY passed a bill to ban shark fin trading!
But that won't mean squat unless the New York state Assembly passes the bill which many people are positive will happen.
Here's what a spokesperson for the Humane Society said:

This is a great step forward…but we'll see how far it goes…
Chinese officials have placed a ban on shark fin soup at all state banquets. While this sounds great for a dwindling shark population, there are a few forks in the way.
First, the new practice will take three years to fully implement….are their meals placed THAT far in advance???

Actress Bo Derek has joined California lawmakers to fight for a bill that would ban selling, trading, or possessing shark fins, which are used in a soup that is a delicacy in many Asian cultures.
In order to get the fins, sharks are caught, then have their fins sliced off before they are thrown back into the ocean where they are left to die.
Bo calls shark-finning "a global environmental crisis" and says that "many stocks may be wiped out."
Thankfully, U.S. law restricts the shark fin trade, however, it has the largest market in California outside of Asia.
Quite startling for an illegal practice.
Keeping our fingers crossed that the bill is passed.
