Molly Ringwald Reexamines John Hughes' 'Inappropriate' Writing & Her Old Films In The #MeToo Era

'The Breakfast Club' had some rough moments.

John Hughes captured the voice of a generation with his beloved '80s movies. But as many have pointed out since, the filmmaker's classics can be problematic when examined under a modern lens.

Even Molly Ringwald, Hughes' former collaborator and long-time muse, had trouble rewatching The Breakfast Club with her 10-year-old daughter in an effort to see how her old films held up with today's young generation.

Spoiler alert: between the creepy shot of her character Claire's underwear to the fact that Claire ends up with John Bender (Judd Nelson) after enduring nothing but verbal abuse, it was a hard watch.

The industry vet's issues were detailed an op-ed for the New Yorker, in which she admitted that while Hughes' writing contained a previously unseen sensitivity and angst, it "could also be considered racist, misogynistic, and, at times, homophobic."

Ringwald also dissected one scene from Sixteen Candles that joked about non-consensual sex. While the scene left a bad taste in her mouth, the actress who played the potentially violated character, interestingly enough, felt okay with it.

Read the illuminating piece HERE to find out why — and see what other classic films are much more disturbing in retrospect (below)!

Consent In Film: Classic Movies That Are WAY Disturbing In Retrospect!

no title

We can't talk about how society needs to change without talking about how movies need to change.

We hate to say it, but a lot of the movies many of us grew up with have some very bad messages about consent.

Whether quietly, loudly, or musically, these flicks describe or show sexual assault with zero (or positive) consequences, often by the heroes of the story! For real, it's pretty icky stuff…

Don't believe us??

man recreates movie scenes with his dog

First we had the geniuses at Cardboard Box Office re-creating movie scenes with their adorable baby boy, and now we have this!!

30-year-old Chris Naka had a similar idea to do some movie spoofs for fun, but instead of posing with a baby, he does this with his precious pooch Wrigley, and the results are just as adorable!

Chris explains that it first began when he was goofing around with some coworkers at the Blue Man Group offices in Chicago, and before he knew it he was starting to get requests:
