SLDN Filing Lawsuit To Secure Equal Benefits For Spouses Of Gay Troops!

sldn filing lawsuit for equal rights in military

The repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT) was a major step in the right direction…now let's finish the job!

Back in July, we were disgusted to learn that even though DADT was being repealed, gays in the military would still not receive the same benefits for their same-sex partners as straight couples.

Now, the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) is planning to file a lawsuit in federal court by the end of the month, in an effort to secure the same rights/benefits for same-sex couples that are given to straight couples.

The lawsuit will go against the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and it claims that the "federal Defense of Marriage Act violates the Fifth Amendment right to due process, in what the group says will be the first case of its kind."

Here's what executive director of SLDN Aubrey Sarvis had to say about the lawsuit:

Inspiring! Discharged Gay Service Members Say It Gets Better!

Because it does, even when it seems like it doesn't.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) has done nothing but inspiring and incredible work for the last 18 years, offering legal aid to men and women discharged from the armed forces under DADT. Today, the SLDN took their inspiring work a step further and released an It Gets Better video that not only goes out to young teens fearful of their sexuality, but also to the soldiers currently fighting two wars - the war on terror and the war to be who they were born to be.

Check out the amazing video (above) to hear how SLDN knows it will get better!

Bravo! We're really moved!

Lady GaGa To Get SLDN Award!

Wonderful!

Lady GaGa will be honored with the Randy Shilts Visibility Award at the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) Annual National Dinner on Saturday.

Held in Washington D.C., Queen GaGa will receive the award in recognition of her "accomplishments in bringing the plight of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) service personnel to the public’s attention."

Army Sergeant First Class Stacy Vasquez, who escorted GaGa at the MTV Video Awards in September, will accept the award on her behalf.

The organization added:

"Lady GaGa’s outspoken commitment to end 'Don’t Ask' discrimination renewed the call for repeal on the national stage and emboldened millions of young people to get engaged, take action and play a decisive role in repealing this bad law. We are profoundly grateful to Lady GaGa for her passion and tireless involvement."

Amen to that!

Congratulations, GaGa! You deserve this.

SLDN Advises Gay Military Members To Keep Quiet About Their Sexual Preference For The Time Being!

sldn-advises-gay-military-members-to-say-closeted-for-the-time-being

This is absolutely infuriating.

Now that the ridiculous 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy has been reinstated, The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network is advising those homosexuals who may have applied to join the military to proceed with caution when discussing their sexual preference!

SLDN spokesman Trevor Thomas explains:

"If a judge in a higher court stays the ruling, 'don't ask, don't tell' will become law again. The Pentagon could use their statement of homosexuality against them."

However, although the legality of the policy is still a mess, OutServe, an underground gay service members group, claims that behind closed doors, most people in military aren't taking the policy seriously!

Co-founder 'J.D. Smith' explains:

"Straight service members are going up to people and asking are you gay and are you a lesbian, the policy is now over. At unit levels peer-to-peer we are seeing people come out, but we are still hiding it from the leadership level. Discussion in units has all been pretty positive."

We're thrilled to hear it, but the fact that it has to be kept from the higher-ups is still a serious issue!

Enough is enough! This policy needs to GO, and ASAP!

Thoughts??

GaGa Wants YOU! The Lady To Hold 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Rally Today In Maine

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, check out the video (above) to see GaGa's message advocating the repeal of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy!

Would U like to help Lady GaGa fight the cause right alongside her? Here are the details of a rally to attend, if you're available, which will be led by the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network as well as Lady GaGa herself!

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) will be holding a grassroots rally with young people near the University of Southern Maine campus on Monday, September 20, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. ET, at Deering Oaks Park, Portland, ME, in a major Senate push to break the expected filibuster by Sen. John McCain of the National Defense Authorization Act, to which repeal is included. The key U.S. Senate vote is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Keep updated on Twitter with the hashtag: #4the14k

If you're unavailable, the SLDN is asking you to call the Capitol switchboard (202) 224-3121 and say the following:

–Tell your senators to vote with Sen. Reid and Sen. Carl Levin in opposing the filibuster, defeat amendments to strike repeal, and defeat any crippling amendments.

–Senators should follow the lead of Sen. Carl Levin who will be managing the defense bill.

–It is critical that the vote on “final passage” takes place before senators leave for the election recess.

Will U join GaGa in her effort to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell?
