Southwest Airlines Apologizes To Mom Who Was Asked To Prove The Biracial Baby She Was Boarding With Was Hers!

Is this insensitive or just insuring the safety of a child?

Twitter seems to be divided after Southwest Airlines apologized for an employee asking a mother to prove her biracial son belonged to her before boarding a flight.

University of California Berkeley women's basketball coach Lindsay Gottlieb fired shots at the company on the social media site Monday following the experience she called "demeaning and insensitive."

Gottlieb explained that although she had her child's passport, the gate agent still needed proof she was the 1-year-old's mother, since they did not share the same last name.

After asking for a birth certificate Gottlieb did not have on her, the employee asked to see a Facebook post of the mother and child as proof of their relationship before allowing them to board a flight from Denver to Oakland, California.

To add insult to precaution, another mother on the plane whose baby has a different last name told the coach that she'd never been asked to prove her baby was hers. Gottlieb said this mother, unsurprisingly, was of "not mixed race fam," explaining:

The country is still reeling from Tuesday's engine failure and tragedy on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 from NYC to Dallas that claimed the life of Jennifer Riordan, a bank executive from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Riordan — who became the first person to die in a commercial air incident in the United States since 2009 — was nearly sucked out of the Southwest Airlines plane when the left engine apparently failed, exploded, and sent shrapnel piercing through the window by her seat.

The Albuquerque native and mother of two was Vice President of Community Relations for Wells Fargo bank for nearly ten years, according to her LinkedIn account, but family, friends, and citizens in Albuquerque are remembering her for far more than her career.

In a statement released to the media, her family recalled Jennifer's "vibrancy, passion, and love" while memorializing her after the tragedy (below):

A woman was was also partially sucked out of the cabin when the window imploded, a different passenger's father-in-law told NBC News, adding she was partially "drawn out" of the plane before being "pulled back in by other passengers."

The chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board confirmed that the plane suffered an "engine failure," which apparently caused part of the covering from its left engine to rip off and puncture a window, leading to violent depressurization of the cabin.

Passenger Marty Martinez told CBS News "there was blood everywhere" from the woman's injury. She was later confirmed to be taken off the plane and brought to a hospital in critical condition.

Robert Sumwalt of the NTSB confirmed to press that one passenger died — no confirmation it was the woman who was partially sucked out of the window — as a result of the incident:

This airport drama is nonstop.

A man is taking legal action against Southwest Airlines after he and his family were denied family boarding privileges due to an employee allegedly discriminating against him for being gay.

Grant Morse was flying from Buffalo, New York to Fort Lauderdale, Florida with his husband Samuel Ballachino, their three young children, and his 83-year-old mother on Saturday when a gate agent denied them family pre-boarding.

The traveler says his brood was "humiliated and embarrassed" when they approached the waiting area for families with young children, only to be thwarted by a female employee who refused to allow them to board early.

Morse said they explained multiple times that they were married spouses traveling with their biological children — but he maintains the gate attendant would still "not see us as a family."

Eventually, the employee said one of the dads could board with the three children (all under 6 years old) while the other would wait with his elderly mother. But Morse said that task would have been "physically impossible" for a lone parent, telling BuzzFeed News:
