To all the stem-cell nay-sayers out there: just LOOK at this girl and realize that it was stem cell research that resulted in a better life for her! Of course, they didn't use embryonic stem cells… but still!
Hannah Warren is a 2 year-old girl that was born without a windpipe, and has been unable to breathe, eat, drink or swallow on her own since she was born in South Korea in 2010. She just had a new windpipe grown from her own stem cells. Absolutely incredible!
The stem cells came from her own bone marrow, specifically from her hip bone. Are you ready to have your mind blown?

Stem cells taken from other people and have been successfully transplanted into a patient's heart to repair damage! What this means is that stem cells donated by strangers proved as safe and effective as patients' own cells for helping restore heart tissue!
Plus, stem cells could be banked for off-the-shelf use after heart attacks, just as blood is kept on hand now. Donation centers could pop up, and it could be like a blood-drive that shows up at your school.

A group of Japanese scientists are claiming to have created a functioning human liver out of stem cells!
The team transplanted induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into the body of a mouse, where it grew into a small, but working, human liver.
A TINY HUMAN LIVER INSIDE OF A MOUSE!
iPS cells have the potential to develop into any body tissue and can be taken from adults — so there's much less of a moral objection to this.
They're saying the breakthrough will lead to creating human organs we can use for transplants!

Forget grass-fed beef. How about Petri dish grown beef instead?
Mark Post, a vascular biologist at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, thinks he'll be able to grow a hamburger in his lab in one year's time by using stem cells harvested from leftover animal material from the slaughterhouse floor.
Sounds kinda gross at first, but if it works, this process could eventually save countless animals' lives

Animals, rejoice! There may be SOME relief on the way!
A scientist in the Netherlands has announced that he's working on creating "cultured meat," which consists of "burgers or sausages grown in laboratory Petri dishes rather than [being] made from slaughtered livestock." Wowsa!
Vascular biologist Mark Post says that the first "lab-grown hamburger" will cost approximately $345,000 to create, and it should be coming soon.

While stem cells have long been thought to be the answer to this type of problem, scientists are starting to believe that we can bypass stem cells altogether and just trick normal cells into turning into something else.
