Meditation Helps Rough San Francisco Schools Find Their Happy Place!

san francisco schools using meditation see boost in student perfromance

Have you had your daily dose of "om" today? Because according to these San Francisco schools, it can make a HUGE difference in your life!

Visitacion Valley Middle School first adopted the Quiet Time program in 2007, which gives students two meditation breaks per day to try and clear their minds! The school, which is situated in one of the roughest neighborhoods in the city, has seen DRASTIC improvements since then!

In just the first year of the program alone, the school saw a 45% drop in suspensions and it now has one of the lowest suspension rates in the city! Attendance is also up to 98%, grades have skyrocketed since then, and perhaps most importantly of all, the youngsters tested as the happiest students in the city — most of which is attributed to a major drop in their stress levels!

Superintendent Richard Carranza, one of the program's biggest supporters, believes more schools should adopt Quiet Time, and he says the results definitely don't lie:

"The research is showing big effects on students' performance. Our new accountability standards, which we're developing in tandem with the other big California districts, emphasize the importance of social-emotional factors in improving kids' lives, not just academics. That's where Quiet Time can have a major impact, and I'd like to see it expand well beyond a handful of schools."

So far, only a few schools in San Francisco have adopted the program, but all of them have seen amazing results across the board!

In fact, the California Achievement Test showed that twice as many students in the Quiet Time program proved to be proficient in english than those who weren't in the program, and the numbers were even bigger when it came to math!

Overall, it looks like the program has definitely led to a huge emotional improvement in these students which has in turn had a huge effect on their grades!

So the real question is, why aren't more schools doing it? It definitely can't hurt!

Flavor Flav Is Coming Back To TV! And Heading To High School!

flavor-flav-to-return-to-high-school-reality-show

And just when we thought he'd been off the grid long enough to be out of our lives forever!

Former Public Enemy rapper Flavor Flav has already touched our lives in bizarre and uncomfortable significant ways with his appearances on such reality shows as The Surreal Life and Strange Love, and now, he's ready to take the Billy Madison route and go back and try to earn his high school diploma - on a reality TV show called Flavor Flav Goes Back To High School!

The rapper will attempt to attend school in Clinton, Iowa, and sources close to production have learned that they're attempting to pay students to stick around and film with him after hours, as to not disrupt the teens' normal schedule during the day.

However, Clinton School System Superintendent Deb Olsen has yet to be fully receptive to the idea, and thinks that his presence will bring "a substantial disruption to the school day" and could have "an adverse effect on students."

Flav has already met with Olsen and a member of the school board, and is expected to speak in front of all the officials in the upcoming weeks.

He explains:

"I want this show to be able to influence people my age, that if you dropped out of high school when you were young it's never too late to go back to get your diploma."

Very true! And we'll admit, he certainly sounds as though he's committed to actually doing it, camera crews or not!

But don't be disappointed if they turn you down, bb!

The well-being of the kids has to come first in these scenarios, and as much as we want to see you succeed, you may have to do so in a night-school setting!

Fingers crossed, either way!

Thoughts??

14-Year-Old Throws Himself In Front Of Tractor Trailer After Years Of Gay Bullying

Another devastating loss.

Brandon Bitner, a 14 year old boy from Snyder County, Pennsylvania, ended up his life on Friday night by stepping in front of a tractor-trailer rig after enduring years of relentless bullying.

In a note written beforehand, he revealed that he didn't have it in him to endure another four years of being called a "faggot" and "sissy" at his high school.

The Midd-West School District's superintendent, Wesley Knapp, claims that with the exception of an undisclosed "humiliating incident" in the cafeteria a few days before his passing, he had received no reports of Bitner being bullied.

He explains:

“I’ve been questioning myself. We can’t be too conscientious. If we see a kid who seems to be hurting, we need to single them out [for help]. The fact they don’t report it doesn’t let us off the hook. We need to reach out to kids. We’re going to try and do a better job.”

Bitner's cousin Katie Goodling continues:

“People have to know — and I’ve been getting his story out on Twitter, Facebook so people can read it — that this can happen to anyone, even people you don’t suspect.”

We can't even begin to express to his family and loved ones how sorry we are for such a tragic loss.

Again, we BEG anyone who feels bullied, tormented, confused, or alone to please speak out to someone.

There are people who love you and need you! There's so much happiness out there that can be yours, it just takes a little time and a lot of courage to find it sometimes! And we promise that it's worth the wait!

It WILL get better. We promise you that!

R.I.P. Brandon. You are in our thoughts.
