Maraschino Cherry Supplier Fatally Shoots Himself In The Head After Police Discover That His Business Was A Front For Drugs
This sounds right out of Breaking Bad.
Police discovered that one of USA's largest maraschino cherry suppliers was actually a front for a hidden drug operation on Tuesday.
That's right, the owner of Dell's Maraschino Cherries, Arthur Mondella, initially cooperated with police when they showed up to his Brooklyn factory, but when they questioned him about some suspicious shelves, he excused himself to go to the bathroom where he fatally shot himself in the head.
Authorities had received a tip that the company was a front for drugs, and the D.A. was able to grant an administrative search warrant to search for any signs that the factory was dumping hazardous waste into the sewers.
After Arthur shot himself, police found roughly 80 lbs. of marijuana, and hundreds of thousands of dollars hidden behind a fake wall.
Arthur had permit for the firearm and kept it concealed by strapping it to his ankle. According to insiders, police should have known to search Arthur for hidden weapons.
A law enforcement source says that Arthur would have likely avoided any jail time.
