Good News, Kids! Study Shows Sweets Could Be Good For You!

Could this be true??

A study at Louisiana State University shows that allowing children to eat sweets could actually prevent them from getting fat.

11,000 children between the ages of 2 and 18 were studied from 1999 to 2004. The children who ate sweets such as candy and chocolate bars were 22% LESS likely to be overweight or obese.

In fact, amongst the adolescents, 26% of those kids who ate candy were more likely to weigh less than the other students.

Researcher Dr. Carol O'Neil says:

"The study illustrates that children and adolescents who consume candy are less likely to be overweight or obese. However, the results of this study should not be construed as a hall-pass to overindulge. Candy should not replace nutrient-dense foods in the diet; it is a special treat and should be enjoyed in moderation."

Researchers added that indulging in sweets every one in a while will "provide moments of happiness within the context of a healthy lifestyle," why is most likely what leads to the children living a more fulfilled life.

This is some crazy research! It seems almost too good to be true for kids. But, like the doctor mentioned, kids should only eat sweets in moderation and remember to never overindulge.

Starbucks anniversary treats

And they look delicious!

In honor of the coffee company's 40th anniversary, Starbucks has introduced two new items on the menu.

Starting today, the Cocoa Cappuccino and Starbucks Petite (pictured above) will be available to purchase in their shops.

The Cocoa Cappuccino combines fresh espresso, bittersweet mocha sauce, steamed milk and foam, and is topped with a mocha drizzle.

The Petites are small sweets including Cake Pops (available in Birthday Cake, Rocky Road and Tiramisu flavors), Red Velvet Whoopie Pies, Mini Cupcakes (Carrot Cake and Peanut Butter) and Sweet Squares (Lemon and Salty Caramel).

Mmm…so tempting. We might just have to give in and try a couple one…be strong…just one.

New Bill Will Limit Sweets In Schools

New Bill Will Prohibit Sweets In Schools

A child-nutrition bill championed by Michelle Obama would give the government power to limit school bake sales and other activities involving sweets that replace healthier meals in the cafeteria.

Many are saying that this is type of activity isn’t in the jurisdiction of the federal government — most notably Sarah Palin and republicans.

"This could be a real train wreck for school districts," said Lucy Gettman, of the National School Boards Association. "The federal government should not be in the business of regulating this kind of activity at the local level."

The legislation would apply to all foods sold in schools during class hours, including at fund-raisers.

While this is not an ideal bill (parents giving their kids the guidance to make healthy decisions would be a better option), it’s clear that there’s a huge obesity problem in the US, and steps like this will help curb this deadly trend.
