People in their 50s and 60s have reported experiencing short bouts of amnesia after having hot, sweaty sex!
We added the "hot, sweaty" part in for effect, it could have been cold, awkward, and disappointing, but still — that's crazy!
The Journal of Emergency Medicine told the story of a 54-year-old woman who began experiencing an episode of temporary global amnesia an hour after having sex.
She arrived at Georgetown University Hospital with her husband, unable to remember the past 24 hours, but all symptoms had cleared by the time she left the emergency room.
The condition is so rare, affecting only about 3 to 5 people per 100,000 each year, that doctors aren't exactly sure how or why it happens.
The best "guess" is that the amnesia is triggered by raising the pressure inside the abdomens, called a valsalva maneuver, during a strenuous physical activity. Sources explain further, writing:
"The increased pressure increases the resistance to blood flowing down the jugular veins, and insufficient valves may allow deoxygenated blood to push back up the neck. Oxygen-poor blood then "piles up" in the veins draining the brain, especially in central brain regions that are key to memory formation. The result could be transient amnesia."
Apparently, this bad reaction has only ever been reported to occur in patients once during their lifetime.
In 1964, a man's memory was instantly wiped from his mind the moment he orgasmed, which as you can imagine, must have been pretty frightening for his partner.
