It wasn't supposed to go like this for The Great Wall!
Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou's big flick starring Matt Damon (pictured above) was supposed to be a big deal in the U.S., but it completely bombed over the long Presidents Day weekend — totaling only about $21 million from more than 3,325 theaters.

Considering the film had a $150 million production budget, that's a very, very bad showing — and remember, this is coming on a technically long weekend at the box office, with Monday's holiday factoring into the totals, too.

Once again, Hollywood is being accused of whitewashing — and rightfully so!
Matt Damon's new movie called The Great Wall is essentially about how a white man needs to come in and save China… and needless to say, Twitter is NOT having it!
While attending last night's premiere, comedian Jenny Yang started the sarcastic hashtag #ThankYouMattDamon to address the white-savior message of the film.

In no time at all, the Chinese-American coproduction was awash with controversy — because some people were claiming it as an example of more Hollywood whitewashing!

Now director Zhang Yimou is coming to the film's defense and explaining the reasoning behind his film's casting!
The famed director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers gave a statement to Entertainment Weekly saying the film is anything but part of a "white savior" problem:

On Thursday, the 45-year-old dished that he's taking a break from acting to spend some time with his family saying:
"They're really good sports. They're great travelers. But I'm excited to finish this year of work and take a year off and be at their behest for once."
