Geena Davis is using her celebrity status to lobby for a bill that will help to improve the image of women.
Joining Senator Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Geena introduced the bill:
"I am proud to join with Sen. Hagan and Rep. Baldwin to promote gender equality and positive portrayals of women and girls in the media. What children see affects their attitudes toward male and female roles and impacts the value they place on girls and women in society. The Healthy Media for Youth Act will help ensure we are creating a positive media environment for all our children."
If it passes, the legislation would provide money to support and encourage youth empowerment groups in media literacy programs and fund research on how those images affect youth.
Geena says that time and time again, there have been negative and stereotypical images of women depicted in Hollywood. She adds, "When there is a woman working in as a writer or producer in a film, there is a greater chance that the film will include more positive images of women and girls."
Preach it, sistah! Such an important cause that is often overlooked by the media. We stand by you 100%, Geena.
