The family that owns the rights to Alvin and the Chipmunks is suing 20th Century Fox, claiming that they are owed half the profits made from last year's The Squeakquel.
Bagdasarian Productions and screenwriter Janice Karma, wife of Ross Bagdasarian, Jr., are claiming that Fox used portions of her screenplay without accounting for "substantial copyrighted contributions" and that it was used without their consent.
Damages could run in the league of tens or hundreds of millions of dollars since The Squeakquel was so popular!
Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. took over the franchise from his father Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. aka David Seville after he passed in 1972.
He's been in many a legal battle over his father's chipmunk creations in the past decade now that studios have been reviving their popularity.
Sounds like he's an expert at this whole thing by now — so maybe they'll be reeling in even more ca$$$h!
