The New Version of Dune Is Doomed

Filed under: Film FlickersR.I.P.Sad SadBusiness Blitz

dune movie is doomed

At least we'll always have the David Lynch version…

Back in November, we heard that Paramount planned to put the new version of Dune into turnaround and sell off the rights if progress wasn't made by Spring.

Unfortunately, significant progress has NOT been made, and the studio has decided to scrap the project, after four years of trying to put it together!

Here's what Richard P. Rubinstein, the man who controls the rights to Frank Herbert's novel, had to say about it:

“Paramount’s option has expired and we couldn’t reach an agreement. I’m going to look at my options, and whether I wind up taking the script we developed in turnaround, or start over, I’m not sure yet.”

“Sure, it’s frustrating, how long this has taken, but most of what I’ve done that worked out well over the years, like the miniseries The Stand, took a long time."

"Since I know what I want, eventually, I’ll find someone who’ll agree with me. What I like is that talent has interesting things to say on how they would approach it.”

“Right now, Dune has no commitments or attachments."

It's too bad Paramount wasn't able to make this happen, but we suppose it'll re-emerge one day at another studio.

Are U sad to hear that Dune is no longer happening?

10 Things Stephen King Hates About You Has To Say About The New Stand

stephen king on the stand

Earlier this week, we learned that a new version of Stephen King's The Stand is in the works.

Now, King has opened up with his thoughts about the upcoming adaptation of his classic novel.

Here are the top ten things he had to say about it to Entertainment Weekly:

1. No one will be able to top Gary Sinise, who played Stu Redman in the original ABC miniseries. He was perfect. When he says “You don’t know nothing” to the soldiers who are putting him under mandatory quarantine, you believe his contempt completely. My runner-up pick would be Jake Gyllenhaal.
2. I didn’t know anything about the remake until I read about it on the Internet.
3. You absolutely can’t make it as a two-hour movie. If it was a trilogy of films…maybe.
4. Molly Ringwald won’t be playing Fran Goldsmith this time.
5. Rutger Hauer is a little too old to play the Walkin’ Dude, and that’s too bad.
6. People who’ve seen Kubrick’s The Shining dislike the miniseries I wrote (and my amigo Mick Garris directed) even if they haven’t seen it. That’s always annoyed me. But the wheel of karma turns! This time people will probably say, “The miniseries was lots better.” BUT…
7. …historically speaking, movie studios blow the budget on things like this, so maybe it’ll be fun to look at. The dough certainly isn’t going to me, although if it is a trilogy, and if it makes a lot of money, I might be able to buy a chicken dinner at Popeye’s. Great slaw!
8. Molly Ringwald will probably not play the Trashcan Man, either, but Billy Bob Thornton would be cool. Billy Bob’s always cool.
9. They need to write in a lot of heavy-metal for the soundtrack.
10. M-O-O-N, that spells “you probably won’t see this anytime soon.” And when you do, Woody Allen won’t be directing it. Or Molly Ringwald.

Thoughts???

Stephen King's The Stand Coming To The Big Screen

stephen-king-the-stand.jpg

This is a big idea to tackle. We hope they know what they are in for.

If you're a Stephen King fan, most likely you've read The Stand. If you're not, you've probably been exposed to its story and not even known it. The 1978 cult-like classic has influenced a lot of other material over the years with its post-apocalyptic themes, but never has anyone actually tackled telling King's story in its on world. Until now…

CBS Films and Warner Bros. have announced that they are taking the first steps in making King's The Stand a major motion picture…or two or three or more motion pictures! Meetings are being set up as we speak with producers to decided on a game plan in attacking making this story translate to a movie. Stephen's said to be a part of the brainstorming process, but no word yet if he'll actually be writing the script.

For those of you who aren't familiar, The Stand is a story of good vs. evil after a virus wipes out most of the American population. A group of survivors spend the majority of the book fighting the Antichrist-like character Randall Flagg. He's one scaaaaary dude! We can't even think of anyone who could play him! Maybe they'll get an unknown.

Like we said, this is a huge undertaking, but if it's done right, they might have the makings of a prosperous new horror franchise. We'd be game for that.

How about U?
