Eric Swenson, an icon in skateboarding culture who is credited as "one of the critical architects" of reinvigorating the sport after opening Independent Trucks manufacturing company in San Francisco and co-founding Thrasher magazine, passed away on Monday
The 64-year-old shot himself in front of the Mission police station, but no details have emerged as to why he would take his own life.
The company he opened with friend Fausto Vitello manufactured a high-quality truck (the metal connector between the skateboard and its wheels) that allowed boarders to execute the incredible tricks we see performed on rails and curbs today.
On top of his technological advancements in the sport, his magazine helped raise awareness about an entirely new generation of skateboarders and pushed the sport back into the public eye.
So sad, but no one can say he didn't
