It's Hard To Find A Decent Hippopotamus Dentist These Days

Hippopotamus Dentist

Need a tic-tac?

A dentist from North Carolina recently traveled all the way to Puerto Rico to perform a dental procedure on a 3,000 lb patient.

For the past 20-years Dr. Mike Loomis has being flying south to treat a 39-year-old male hippo named Tomy.

The Ferré zoo's most popular animal suffers from a malocclusion, which prevents his lower teeth from wearing properly, and they eventually overgrow to the point that they interfere with his eating.

"The first time I performed the dental procedure on Tomy, his teeth had grown through his upper lip, making it very painful for him to chew. He was very thin, and I was concerned about the risk of anesthesia. Since then, the zoo has done a great job of making sure that his teeth are trimmed before they get to that point,"

explained Loomis.

Sounds like Tomy is super lucky to have such a talented friend from the states — even if he's not more giving with the anesthesia!

Hayden Panettiere: Actress And Realistic Activist

Hayden Panettiere loves dolphins

How can someone so cute also be nice??

At 22-years-old, actress Hayden Panettiere has already done a lot for fave animals by becoming a spokeswoman for the Whaleman Foundation.

The blonde starlet talks all about her love for marine animals in the September issue of Conde Nast Traveler, where she describes herself to the magazine as "realistic activist." She says:

"I'm an activist who's aware of what's realistic to achieve and what's not. I wouldn't waste my time going straight for the jugular — I'm not going to preach to people to not eat meat. The Whaleman Foundation's goals are achievable, and they make sense."

We totally respect that!

If you wanna see Panettiere talking about nighttime slaughter of dolphins check out Conde Nast Traveler or rent the Oscar-winning documentary The Cove.

A lot of airports have taken great initiatives to be more pet travel friendly, including offering areas for pet owners to take their furry friends to take care of some business.

PETA Asks Pope To Use A Leather-Fee Popemobile

PETA Asks Pope To Use A Leather-Fee Popemobile

Bold move PETA!

The animal rights group formally known as PETA has urged Pope Benedict XVI to "truly go green" and insist that the next popemobile is made without leather.

PETA said it has written to the pope with the request following the Vatican's confirmation Wednesday that Germany's Mercedes-Benz auto company is making a study of a hybrid, energy-saving popemobile.

The car would replace the current Mercedes vehicle used when the pope travels abroad.

The Vatican press office said Friday it hadn't seen the letter and couldn't comment.

Benedict has made conserving resources an important concern of his papacy, so there's a chance he might go along with it.

Nintendo DS Made A Virtual Pet

Wappy Dog

Is this creepy?

Wappy Dog teaches young gamers to raise their very own "puppy" in both the real and virtual worlds and teach it cool tricks, play mini-games together and even converse. (And this ain't no Tomagotchi either!)

The player’s interaction with their Wappy Dog determines the pet’s constantly evolving personality, skills, and happiness.

In "home mode" the pet takes the form of the robot dog, and in "travel mode" owners can play with their "friend" through their Nintendo DS.

In a Press statment Nintendo said:

“This one-of-a-kind toy and video game combines a strong emotional bond and exciting virtual experience with the interaction of a physical pet. Wappy Dog is a truly innovative next generation toy and video game that gives kids an instant companion.”

We hope this product helps teach kids (or whoever) how be a good pet owner BUT we're worried that a virtual dog might take the place of a animal that needs a home.

Four Legged Jet Setter

jet Blue's pet of 2010

Amazbarks!

After logging more than 24 flights and an estimated 10,000 miles, this 1-year-old Maltipoo has officially been named JetBlue Airways's Most-Traveled Pet in 2010.

Meanwhile… we know some bitches that can't handle a car ride to the vet.

So just how did Moose end up being such a frequent flier?

Moose's owner, Jamie Griebner, currently studies law at Boston's Suffolk University, but she made frequent visits — with her puppy — to her hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., about 400 miles away.

Perhaps it was the early introduction to flying, but Griebner says that she and Moose have never had a bad experience. Before boarding any flight, she always makes sure to take Moose for a long walk to expend his excess energy, and packs a bone for him to chew.

Even when he isn't quite ready to fly, Moose's cuteness often leads others to want to help out.

As for the photo contest, the airline's 13,000 crewmembers will vote on their favorite photo, and the winner get will a two-night, three-day vacation package to the Hotel Palomar Los Angeles, a hospitality venue that has been cited for its pet friendliness, JetBlue said.
