Not everyone loved the idea of American Idol.
Simon Cowell sat down with Oprah on her upcoming series Master Class on the OWN network and told her the story of how he was kicked out of a major U.S. TV network after pitching the format for American Idol.
Simon says that he left the U.S. with "my tail between my legs" after a meeting with a TV boss that "was so bad that a minute into the pitch, the guy said, 'No.'"
smart ass sarcastic guy that he is, Simon joked, "So, it sounds like you're interested?" right before the exec told to him to "Get out."
Unfortunately for Simon, he hadn't booked a car to pick him up and was left sitting on the steps of the building. He recalled, "I turned to the other Simons and said, 'The good news is, it will never get worse than this.'"
As we all know, AI became an instant hit in 2001 and the rest is history.
Bet that network exec is angry he ever told Simon Cowell "no."
