Study Finds Antibiotics More Effective For Treating UTIs Than Cranberries

Women have long considered cranberries as a go-to cure for a common urinary tract infection, but a new European study says otherwise.

Paired up against low-dose antibiotics, women with a history of recurring UTIs who took cranberry supplements for one year had an average of four infections during that time. However, women taking the antibiotics only had an average of 1.8 UTIs a year.

While nature may not be a match for modern medicine, the study's authors believe cranberries still have a place in treating or preventing infections, saying:

"Most patients do not like to take antibiotics for a long period. I think that cranberries are still a good alternative."

They are a good alternative because relying on antibiotics may increase chances of developing a resistance, as one doctor explained:

"In terms of ability to prevent recurrent infections, the antibiotic was about twice as effective as cranberry, but it results in more antibiotic resistance."

The same expert pointed out that the study did not take into account the participants dosage of cranberries, saying:

"One pitfall of this study was that the dosage of cranberry was on the low end, so it would be conceivable that a higher dose would be effective."

Hopefully we'll find out soon though. A study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health is under way to determine the ideal dose of cranberry for UTI prevention.
