The Mekong River region of Southeast Asia, a biodiverse region, is threatened by deforestation, habitat loss, overdevelopment and climate change.

Yet researchers were still able to find 208 new species there.

Out of the new species, some of the coolest were a "psychedelic gecko" and a nose-less monkey with an Elvis style hair-do.

Dognapping Is A Problem in Vietnam

Doggy Dog

In Vietnam, a dog can sell for $50-100; the equivalent of the average Vietnamese man's month salary.

The dogs are sold to restaurants where they are killed, skinned and then eaten.

Disgusting.

Thieves on motorbikes ride through towns, snatching up dogs.

Most townspeople don't even call the police because there are no real penalties for dog thievery. They instead turn to vigilante justice.

Some mobs have chased down the thieves and literally clubbed them to death then lit them on fire. The thieves have also been fighting back, shooting arrows and hurling bricks at their pursuers.

A bystander was even killed after being hit in the head with a thrown brick.

The stolen dogs are rarely recovered.

The violence is coming mainly from a clash between an old and new way of thinking.

Many in Vietnam are adopting a more Western style of human-animal companionship.

A founder of animal group to raise awareness of this cruelty going on in Vietnam said:

"You are really witnessing the convergence of two trends. The old way of the dog meat trade, where animals didn't count for much, is coming up against the new trend of keeping true companion animals that are loved, nurtured and valued for their own sake."

Normally we'd say something about how they should adopt rescue dogs but we won't allow that until they stop eating them first.

A Home For Asia's Unicorn

Asia's Unicorn Is Getting A Home

It's not an emo band, it's an animal!

This cutie is is so super rare super shy that humans didn't even know out them till 1992! (Moments later it was deemed critically endangered.)

Almost 20 years later, the furtive saola is getting a new nature reserve in Vietnam.

The rare, small-horned ox known as Asia’s unicorn is threatened due to illegal hunting with snares and dogs.

Conservationists estimate that there are no more than a few hundred saola left in the wild, but it is hard to know for sure since they are so shy and rarely seen.

There are no saola in captivity, and the few that have been captive died within days of capture.

Saola extinction in the wild means extinction everywhere.

Vietnam's Sacred Turtle Resists Rescue

Rafeteus swinhoei turtle

Tuesday, dozens of workers waded chest-deep through the chilly green water in Hoan Kiem Lake to try to capture the giant freshwater creature for the first time so it could be pulled to an island and treated.

It is one of the world's most endangered turtles — one of only four known living in the world — but in Vietnam many believe it is magical in that it helped a Vietnamese king fend off Chinese invaders nearly 600 years ago.

In recent days, photos of it surfacing with pink open sores on its wrinkled neck, shell, and legs have sparked near panic among the public. Some experts fear pollution in the lake is slowly killing the turtle that is affectionally called "great-grandfather."

Dozens of men waded into the water to try to gradually net the creature and drag it to the island. But even with the military involved in the rescue, the feisty turtle managed to slip through the nets and escape.

It looks like rescuing a magical creature isn't as easy as planned.
