People INSIDE the cars aren't the only worry anymore for Volvo!
The clever car makers are launching their new airbag system that actually protects pedestrians if they're struck by the vehicle!
The new system is available in the 2013 V40 model, and if you look at the pic (above), you'll see that it's under the hood. It will inflate in a few hundredths of a second to cover around a third of the windshield.
It's only launched at speeds between 12 to 31 mph.
Unfortunately there are unavoidable situations where this would need to deploy, but we'd much rather people drive cautiously than to ever need to rely on this!
The system's seven sensors are located at the front of the vehicle. They can actually detect legs — and if they detect them, everything launches automatically!
Science!

Pedestrians will be a little safer soon. If they get hit by a 2013 Volvo V40, at least!
The newest Volvo model is the FIRST-EVER car to utilize pedestrian airbag technology and will make it's debut this week at the Geneva Motor Show.
According to sources, a sensor on the front bumper registers contact between a car and pedestrian, which then triggers the release of an airbag from a section of the hood closest to the windshield (as seen in the picture above).
Basically, the new feature softens the blow for any pedestrian unlucky enough to land against a windshield after a speeding vehicle launches them into the air.
Pretty cool, right? This isn't the first time Volvo has been a leading innovator in safety features either.
The car company was the first to implement the three-point safety belt, safety glass, and the first to offer the frontal airbag, which has since become a standard in all new automobiles.
