Whale Wars Gets A Spin-Off

Last February, the Sea Shepherd, the marine conservation group that stared in Animal Planet's Whale Wars, won the battle against Japan's whaling.

Yah For Whales, boo for Animal Planet!

Now that Japan has suspended its controversial whaling operations the network has a prime time slot to fill.

So the network has ordered a spin-off!! Hooray!

Tentatively titled The Faroe Islands Project, the show has the Sea Shepherds (including Capt. Paul Watson) charting a course to the Danish Protectorate of the Faroe Islands, where there’s an annual hunt for pilot whales titled “The Grind.”

In a practice going back to the first Norse settlements on the islands, an estimated 1,000 whales are corralled by local residents into the shallow coves to be killed.

Shooting begins in July for an unspecified number of episodes and no air date is set. And with some reports that the Japanese might re-start their whaling efforts, Animal Planet is also prepared to order a fifth season of Whale Wars.

Japan Suspends Whaling - Sea Shepherds Declare Victory!

Sea Shepherd Victory

Way to shepherd!

Japan has temporarily suspended its annual Antarctic whaling after repeated harassment by a conservationist group, a government official said Wednesday.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ships have been chasing the Japanese whaling fleet for weeks in the icy seas off Antarctica, trying to block Japan's annual whale hunt, planned for up to 945 whales.

The Sea Shepherd group has been shadowing Japan's whaling fleet for several years, and has received a lot of attention including a popular Animal Planet series Whale Wars.

Japan has halted the hunt since Feb. 10 after persistent "violent" disruptions by the anti-whaling protesters. Even if they start up soon Japan is unlikely to fill it's quota for the year.

Due to anti-whaling campaigners Japanese whalers ended up catching only about half of their target during last years full season.

We hope this inspires more Lisa Frank folders and notebooks.
