This is terrible.
In what health officials are calling the worst outbreak in 60 years, a 10th victim has fallen to whooping cough.
All of the deaths have been in infants under 3 months. There have been 5,978 confirmed/probable cases of the disease reported in California this year.
The problem with this illness is that these babies were too young to be vaccinated, and the vaccine only lasts for so long, so adults who were vaccinated as kids are no longer immune. That means these toddlers were most likely infected by their parents or caregivers, who are more able to fight the disease.
Alison Patti, a spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has emphasized the importance of everyone getting vaccinated to prevent further spread.
Be a part of the solution to this problem and get vaccinated!
