State Fair Animals Given Performance Enhancing Drugs?

| Filed under: Sad SadAnimal RightsIcky Icky Dog Poo

Absolutely foul. This makes us ill.

There's been quite a bit of controversy surrounding prized animals at various state fairs lately, because apparently the owners have begun doping up cows, steers, and other to enhance their performance during judging!

Winning animals can earn up to $100,000, causing some owners to go to extreme techniques to ensure that theirs come out on top - and it's reached such a prevalence that the state of Ohio has banned up to 8 different substances from being used!

Bulls and steers have been tested positive for steroids, while many cows have water or foam sprayed down their throats - just to appear plumper during judging!

The drug Lasix has also become popular, because it forces fluid out of animals and can make them lose hundred of pounds - which helps the animal compete in a different weight class. However, it is extremely dangerous, and can cause blood pressure problems and mess with the animal's electrolytes.

If you want to willingly poison yourself that's one thing, but to do it to an animal to make cash?

Luckily, veterinarians and judges are now attempting to ensure that none of the animals in competition are being mistreated - to the extent that they are monitored and never left alone, and periodically tested for substances in their system that do not belong.

We just can't get over how disgusting this all is.

The lengths people will go to make money, and at the expense of others, even defenseless animals. It never ceases to amaze us.

So sad.
