Wheelchair Bound Dog Climbs Mount Washington

This may be the most truly inspirational story yet.

Lucy used to live in Puerto Rico. Lucy used to have the function of all four of her legs.

After an accident in front of a pet store that involved her getting hit by a car, she was adopted by a New Hampshire resident, Courtney Dunning in 2008, after staying in the Second Chance Animal Rescue in Puerto Rico for two years.

Lucy arrived in NH with a wheelchair that was for another dog, which didn't fit her well. After a chance encounter with an employee from a company that specializes in pets with special needs, Lisa-Marie Mulkern, she was given a custom made wheelchair.

Through facebook, Lucy soon became popular and was urged to try climbing Mount Washington via its auto road. Not a small feat by any means, since Mt. Washington is 6,288ft tall, making it the highest peak in the Northeast.

The journey may have taken six hours and two minutes, but they accomplished what they set out to do, walking more than eight miles to the summit!

"Handicapped pets can do more than just survive injuries," Mulkern says. "Not only is Lucy able to survive and move around, but she's really able to thrive and accomplish things that any other fully-able dog could do. It was really exciting."

Exciting isn't the right word for it - amazing does it justice. Lucy is a great example of the power and will of animals. We are proud of your accomplishments and can only imagine what else you are capable of!
