On September 16, Firu, an American bull-dog mix was tied to his owner's truck during a party in Mecklenburg County, NC.
Horrible as it is - Firu's owner, a couple of drinks later, forgot about him and drove off. Someone who saw the truck pull away tried to tell them to stop, but they kept driving.
Firu had lost the pads on all of his paws, his toenails ripped off, severe road rash over his shoulder and chest, and the tops of his paws were stripped of skin all the way to the bone.
Samantha Hodge, a local registered animal rescuer wanted to help Firu and became his guardian.
Firu's story has received national attention, and his struggles have inspired many. Ellen DeGeneres heard about Firu sent Hodge a personal check for $2,000, PetSmart has donated $2,500, and $500 came in from someone that found out about Firu through Facebook.
"He's very strong," Hodge says. "I don't see him as an injured dog anymore. I don't see him as a victim."
This story is heartbreaking but inspiring at the same time. It's horrible to know that these kind of things happen to animals, but its wonderful that there are people like Samantha Hodge in the world willing to save a life.
Firu's fight and recovery also show the will and testament of animals. Even after this abuse, Firu is still the loving dog he once was, proving what amazing, loving creatures they are.
ACCIDENTAL ABUSE IS STILL ABUSE!
