Sort of. At least now it has a bit more protection.
Last week, the Interior Department announced that the African penguin will be listed as an endangered species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The cute little creatures have suffered a massive decline in numbers since preindustrial times. Over the past few decades, over 95 percent have vanished!
But being put on the list offers the penguins new protection as well as raises awareness to their plight. Under the new Endangered Species Act, the penguins will receive some conservation funding and more research will be implemented to improve their numbers.
Wonderful! They're all so cute, we'd hate to think of them disappearing for good!
