Many dogs have to deal with separation anxiety.
This is more than whining when you leave for work. This is excessive barking, destructive chewing, pacing, drooling or more.
There is a new pill called Reconcile, a beef flavored Prozac-style compound, that is supposed to alleviate this anxiety.
The pill is not a cure-all, says one vet.
"If you're working with your vet, there are other things that they might suggest. Give your dog a job, some food puzzles or exercise. Teach them to sit. Teach them to retrieve objects. Teach them to do things."
The vet said that because dogs descend from wolves, they still have some wild instincts, and it can actually be good for their mental health to make them do things like work for their food.
"You never see a corpulent coyote or a wandering wolf. All dogs come from wolves. They're used to detecting food, pursuing it, apprehending it, killing it, competing with the rest of the pack, and then consuming it.
We've simplified this for them by just giving them food in a bowl."
Imagine how much better it'd be if you were at work, and knew that your dog wasn't suffering with anxiety at home.
Score another one for science!
