This is incredible!
What a crazy story.
Brody the black lab was a friendly and playful dog who "loved everything and everyone."
He would regularly squeeze his way through his Florida home's back porch gate and go exploring, but would always return by nightfall.
His family immediately began posting flyers.
Debby Stevens, owner, then received a phone call.
'We heard nothing at all on Thursday. But on Friday a woman called. She said: ‘I know where your lab is.’'
Apparently the caller said a family relative was visiting Florida and came across Brody.
Her children befriended him and asked if they could keep him. And she said YES!
So they loaded Brody in their car and headed back to New York.
But on the way, in Maryland, the woman was pulled over by a cop and arrested for drunk driving!
Her three kids were sent to foster care homes for the night and Brody was sent to the local pound.
The next morning, when the woman was released from jail she was hit and killed by an Amtrak train in Havre de Grace!
That's insane and so sad!
So the caller said Debby should try and call some of those local shelters and hung up.
Debby Stevens said:
'I was so grateful for her call, but I just thought: Oh, my God. This is the craziest thing — how does this happen? How did they even get so far in a day and a half?'
After calling 15 or so Maryland shelters they tracked down Brody.
They were going to use a service called Mutt Movers, who help transport dogs for free to get them back home.
But the SPCA shelter said only the owner could pick up the dog.
So Debby flew out to get Brody.
It was a very happy reunion.
She walked to his cage and said "Brody?"
Brody immediately leapt up and began wagging his tail like a maniac.
She began to cry.
The SPCA worker said:
'There was no doubt about it. That dog just came alive.'
Because Brody was old and couldn't fly, Mutt Movers still used 10 volunteers to leap frog him back to Florida.
Yay! Happy ending!
