Sad….Lonesome George has left this world…

Found on the smallest Galapagos Island, La Pinta, Lonesome George was around 100 years old when he was found motionless by the park ranger in charge of the tortoises.

Part of the species that contributed to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, Lonesome George was the last of his particular kind of giant tortoise.

The Galapagos National Park is considering embalming LG's body, so he can be displayed for years to come.

Saving George's kind met with unsuccessful results twice. Two females were brought in to mate with LG but both laid infertile eggs.

There are currently 20,000 giant tortoises remaining in the Galapagos Islands.

RIP Lonesome George
