South Korea has appealed to the International Whaling Commission to allow whaling for scientific research. The country wants to exploit a loophole in the 1986 commercial whaling ban that allows whaling for scientific purposes.
Korea claims that they want to study what kind of fish the whales eat, as many Korean fisherman have complained about the whales' stealing their catch.
Conservation groups and many others believe that this is just a front to bring back commercial whaling.
Australia and New Zealand are tag-teaming their assault on Korea's appeal, claiming they will pursue diplomatic protest to stop the whaling plan.
But the South Korean delegates aren't seeking public approval, just the Commission's approval.
But more than likely….this appeal is dead in the water.
