Humboldt penguins are in desperate need of our help!
There are a myriad of factors that are stacked up against the penguin's survival and now rats can be one of the biggest factors.
Adults are in constant danger from man, changing tides and pesky gulls and pelicans. Rats are now eating penguin eggs and chicks, which pushes the Humboldt penguin population to the brink of extinction!
Experts believe the rats are migrating from a Chilean resort, where millionaires stash their yachts. A 260 foot breakwater built to protect the lavish lifestyle of the millionaires has caused the rats to migrate to the isalnds where penguins lay their eggs.
Dwindling from hundreds or thousands to under 45,000, the Humboldt penguin is very vulnerable.
Chile has outlawed penguin hunting through 2024 and some islands have become sanctuaries.
Still, more needs to be done to help these penguins survive!
