So what's got everyone second guessing about owning a pet?
The American Veterinary Medical Association will release a study that shows the decline in pet owners from 2006 to 2011.
In the research, surveys show that pet ownership is down across the board, whether the pet is a dog, cat, bird, horse, or other animal.
Overall, ownership is on the decline but 2.4 percent, with dogs still being the most popular pet of choice with 36.5 percent of households owning a pooch.
Dog owners are also shown to be more inclined to take their doggie to the vet more than other types of pets. Owners spent 19.1 million at the vet, at 18.6 percent hike since 2006.
50,000 households were surveyed in the five year study.
