Paul McCartney has tackled a lot for animals…

Elephants. School Lunches. Animal Testing in Cosmetics…you name it.

So what is his next endeavor? The sea turtles of the Cayman Islands!

Sir Paul is launching a campaign against farming sea turtles, announcing his plans on Twitter:

The Cayman Islands breeds, farms, slaughters and then sells sea turtles and the rocker wants to end this madness.

The farm itself has said interest in sea turtles has waned and 58,000 people have pledged to help end sea turtle farming.

I'm from the Cayman Islands and I just want to say that I am opposed to any form of animal maltreatment. With respect to the turtle farm, I've been following up on the issue somewhat. In Perez's article, there was failure to mention that the farm serves a very important purpose in that turtles are bred to be released into the wild: In fact, it has become a Caymanian tradition which I think is important in keeping up the number of sea turtles in nature. I personally do not consume turtle meat, but all over the world various cultures consume protein in all shapes and forms because that is what's available to them. I think that in the West there seems to be the concept that eating anything other than cow, pig, and chicken is viewed as an aberration. These animals are also "bred, farmed, slaughtered and sold". What is anyone doing about that? If conditions on the farm are unacceptable for farming turtles, they simply need to be improved just like the conditions of cow, pig and chicken farms as I cannot see mass populations doing without those vital sources of protein.
