It's raining squid! Hallelujah, it's raining squid! But not uh…it's NOT alright!
The Humboldt squid isn't a very common sight to humans….the reason?
It likes to dwell between 660 to 2,300 feet UNDER WATER…near SOUTH AMERICA!
Sadly, these cephalopods are stranding themselves ashore in nonnative waters near Santa Cruz and scientists have no idea why these squid are basically committing suicide.
fish master researcher William Gilly (perfect name) tries to explain:
My theory is that when the squid invade a new area … they follow an algorithm (which is to) swim and find productive areas, especially by investigating anomalies, until you run into trouble.
That mission takes some of them onto the beach. The question I can’t answer is why they stop doing this after they successfully colonize an area.
And guess what folks? Humboldt squid are hostile towards humans!
Congrats! Your nightmares are becoming a reality!!!!!!!
Humboldt squid grow up to five feet in length and will attack divers if they are bothered underwater.
Yay!!!! We're terrified of what could happen next! LOLz!
