Jillian Michaels Fights Against Horse Slaughter!!

| Filed under: Legal MattersPolitikPETAJillian MichaelsHorses

Jillian Michaels

While on a recent trip to Capitol Hill, Jillian Michaels spoke with Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein about cosponsoring a bill that would ban the slaughter of horses in America.

PETA's Vice President Dan Mathews was there as well, lending his voice to the issue.

They all retreated to Sen. Boxer's office to talk more about the bill that would make it illegal to kill horses for their meat but also they discuss the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act.

The SAFE Act would keep toxic horse meat from entering our food supply.

Horse meat is often treated with a carcinogenic drug that can cause liver failure in humans.

Who the heck wants to be eating horses anyway?!

We really hope this bill passes!

Thanks for fighting the good fight, Jillian!!

What really disgusts me about horse slaughter are the excuses given by those who support it…namely ranchers. I'm not grouping them all as one unit, but a lot of ranchers have voiced their opinion that horse slaughter would allow them to dispose of animals too hurt or old to work anymore while receiving some small measure of financial gain. Horses in this country aren't bred for food, and on a ranch, they're in a working partnership with the people that own them. The idea that a living creature that gave you faithful service in building and maintaining your lifestyle can be disgarded like so much garbage when old age or an injury sets in is just horrifying. There's a real sense of ingratitude and betrayal there.

Oh, and did anyone else pick up on the irony of that guy's name? Boxer was the horse from animal farm that was sent off to the glue factory by the pigs once his usefulness was gone.

Horse slaughter is NOT "humane" NOR is it "euthanasia." This is what promoters and profiteers of commercial horse slaughter have been widely quoted by the press as claiming!

Let's talk about horse slaughter and the ludicrous possibility that millions in funding to the USDA would go to inspect a process in clear violation of the Humane Slaughter Act of 1958 for foreign-backed companies and a foreign market that is many times an illegal one: Bovines and equines (cattle and horses) are both supposed to be "rendered insensible with a single (1) shot" before vivisection, before they hang on the hook, according to Federal Law. A large percentage (at least 40%) of horses regain consciousness on slaughter lines after they are hanging. This fail rate climbs to nearly 100% with wild, untrained or under-trained horses who will not let anyone near their poll without a fight. The captive-bolt is ineffective at rendering them senseless and they are routinely shot in the head multiple times before their vivisection for harvesting is completed. Animal advocates are outraged over this because of the extremity of this barbaric practice. This is evidenced in the following video, as well as many that can be found on YouTube: And here is the law:

Re: Karin Hauenstein – You can see any video of ineffective captive-bolt application on equines by going to YouTube and searching "horse wakes up." The Law can be seen by Googling "Humane Slaughter Act of 1958."

Without horses, this country would not be what is today! We owe them a debt of gratitude and our respect! Horses are gentle creatures, who love and feel pain just as much as we do! I fully support the end of horse slaughter here and the shipping of horses to Mexico. Obama said in a broken campaign promise that he would do more to help animals in this country and once again he lied!
