This is nuts! Literally! Sort-of!
Scientists have determined that male guppies can reproduce nearly ten months after they've died.
The reason for this phenomenon is because female guppies can store sperm inside their body as they wait for the optimal time to fertilize the sperm.
Male guppies' average life span is 3-4 months while female guppies' life span is more like 2 years.
Here's what one scientist said:
“Adult female guppies are the strongest swimmers and now we know they are the best able to colonize new habitats. Long term sperm storage means that a single female can colonize a new site and establish a new population that has a fair measure of genetic diversity since we have found that the older, larger females can carry the sperm of several males."
That's ridiculous! They can carry multiple sperms!!
It's kind of sad that the male guppies won't ever be able to see their baby guppies grow, but we guess that's just the name of the game.
And that game's name is called nature!
