50,000 Stray Dogs Roam The Streets Of Detroit Due To The City's Financial Problems!

50,000 stray dogs roam the streets of Detroit!

We know that most cities have a pretty serious stray dog problem but jeez! We had no idea it was this bad!

Packs of wild, abandoned dogs are literally all over Detroit, roaming in packs of 20! Because of the city's financial troubles, the town's people are not the only ones suffering.

The Humane Society of the United States director visited Detroit recently, saying:

"It was almost post-apocalyptic, where there are no businesses, nothing except people in houses and dogs running around. The suffering of animals goes hand in hand with the suffering of people."

One cop even saw several dogs in the flooded basement of a home who had its pipes stolen by thieves. The problem is that 70% of dogs brought into shelters are euthanized.

What's worse is the city's animal control department's budget has been cut!

C'mon, Detroit! Figure out a plan of action and FAST!!

Poor doggies…

Detroit is a good example of what happens when you have elected Democrats run a city for fifty years, that plus the corrupt unions, that bribe them to sign off on contracts, that have driven the city into bankruptcy
I'm guessing that Obama got about 90% the vote in Detroit

I live in the suburbs of Detroit and go there often to the bars, sporting evens, restaurants…..this stupid posting makes Detroit out to seem like it is nothing butt barren land with some run down building and packs of dogs just waiting to attack. I have yet to see a "pack of 20 dogs" just running around, and I'm sure this article is way exaggerating. So sick of the media only talking about the bad of this beautiful city. If you've never lived here or at the very least BEEN here, stop all the hate. Detroit, while it has many many problems, also has a lot to offer and a of beauty.

packs of roaming dogs were an issue in the 80's …it's been out of control for years. Iron and Wright street security were afraid then. Now don't get me wrong. I love Detroit and Detroit is a beautiful city, give it a chance. There was nothing like a Sunday stroll along the streets of Detroit buying balloons in the street and listening to characters on the street corners preaching, singing and playing music. I cry when I see the pictures, I know Detroits beauty.

Re: Gwen T – I also live about 45 mins from Detroit. I'm sick of people putting the city down. I go there for games and bars too and it's a fun city..I don't see packs of dogs running around. I see a lot people having fun and enjoying the city. Detroit already has a bad rep because people who haven't been/lived here only read the media. Please don't post anymore shitty articles about Detroit Perez. It just adds fuel to the fire.

Re: RIZAAAA – Shut up. People like you make me sick. Detroit is not JUST what you see from Perez's ignorant posting. I live 5 minutes from there — I spend more of my time in Detroit than in Dearborn. You should see all the amazing things going on ESPECIALLY with all the current scandals.

Perez, you should also do your research on Detroit. Because all big cities have had problems and have bad areas. Please, respect the Paris of Midwest. No one posts articles insulting the Bronx or parts of LA. Just because Detroit filed bankruptcy, doesn't mean it's open season on humiliating it at the people who DO care.

For those who really are concerned about these animals this is the site to visit:

A great organization full of caring volunteers who take in many if not most of the stray animals in Detroit. Maybe Perez should make a donation?

Yeah. I'm in the burbs as well, and frequent Detroit quite regularly. I also photograph many of the buildings and such in the more "blown out" areas and carry while doing so because I've been told this same thing. Though no matter I happen to be I've yet to run into any packs or that many strays even.

Wow, this is going on in AMERICA?! Gave me chills. You two are from the burbs. I'm sure there are good and bad parts as with most cities. Praying for Detroit.

I know Perez loves animals and just wanted to reassure him that the story was largely based on comments made by DDR which has an interest in promoting the perception that Detroit is overrun by hordes of dogs. Not true. There have been instances of dogs being abandoned by people who leave homes. These unfortunate animals are sometimes rescued by groups dedicated to rescue, rehabilitation and adoption. Detroit Dog Rescue may have gotten a big chunk of money but are widely regarded by people involved with rescue as fame-seekers doing little to actually help animals.

You might want to read this follow-up story that denounces the ridiculous 50,000 number.

Whether its 1 or 50,000, people that take on the responsibility of having a pet should take care of them. If tomorrow I lost everything, I would take my dog with me and give her my last morsel of food before I took care of myself. I help at a shelter and so many a-holes bring in dogs that are no longer fit in their lives. It's so heartbreaking, because the dogs have no idea obviously what happening!

Sounds exactly like the packs of roaming dogs in Russia.

Please do some research. This "50,000 stray dogs" stat has been debunked. If it were true that would be like 360 stray dogs per square mile and that just isn't the case. We would be tripping over dogs. The animal control director likes to use the 50,000 false number to justify that his Animal Control kills 100% of the dogs they pick up in Detroit. They fired their vet and cancelled their Adoptions program. Please check out this more accurate and factual article:
