Remember when the worst thing that happened during the government shutdown was we lost our precious panda cam??
That was totes the worst!
During the government shutdown the Smithsonian's National Zoo had to close its gates! And it lead to the saddest photo we've ever seen!
Well the zoo is now back open! Huzzah!
While it was closed, some inneresting shiz went down: there was a departure, two deaths and some SEX!
A female lowland gorilla, Kigali, left the zoo and headed to the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita as part of a breeding program.
Sable, a large Aldabra tortoise, about 100-years-old, had failing kidneys and an upper respiratory infection that she succumbed to, passing away after 57 years at the zoo. So sad!
A wrinkled hornbill, an endangered bird, was found dead in the birdhouse. She was new to the zoo and was part of a pair! That's awful!
But there was some good news too! Two lions had some sex! So maybe there'll be some lion cubs soon!
And the best news ever?? The zoo's giant panda cub has grown, gaining 2-pounds!!
Don't believe us? Check out the panda cam… it's back online!!!
That's ahmayzing! We're so glad the zoo is back open! No more super sad children! Woo!
