We previously mentioned one wildlife group already declared the Western Black Rhino extinct.
Originally, we thought they might have jumped the gun a little, seeing as how the World Wildlife Fund had estimated there were still about 4,000 of the rhinos left.
Well now, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the largest conservation network, has declared the subspecies totally extinct.
Dead. Gone. Donezo.
Poached into extinction by heartless poachers. Thanks for that.
The chair man of the IUCN species survival commission said:
"In the case of the western black rhino and the northern white rhino the situation could have had very different results if the suggested conservation measures had been implemented. These measures must be strengthened now, specifically managing habitats in order to improve performance, preventing other rhinos from fading into extinction."
With the Northern White rhino and Javan rhino on the verge of extinction as well, conservationists are hoping this is a wake up call!
Let's save the rhinos!!
