Field Museum scientists have found a new "top predator" dinosaur in Utah!
This is really cool because this dino, dubbed Siats meekerorum, is a precursor to the T-Rex.
Siats was around tens of millions of years before the T-Rex and is part of the allosauroids' megaraptor subgroup. That sounds like it's an allosaurus (basically a T-rex) mixed with a giant velociraptor.
So basically just super terrifying!
At 4-tons and 30-feet-tall, Siats is the third-largest carnivore found on this continent.
One of the researchers said:
"It's more than just a new dinosaur. It's the first evidence we have of a whole new group of dinosaurs in North America. And it challenges a view that was common maybe a decade or so ago where we thought, 'OK, you know, North America, rising sea levels, the species seem to be very unique to North America and only remotely related to (those on) other continents.' That's slowly being challenged. This is another piece of evidence saying, 'No, dinosaurs were actually distributing themselves pretty widely across the continents.'"
So this isn't just some cool new species to draw badass pictures of and fantasize about saddling up and riding.
It's important to science and history and everything we know about dinosaurs in North America! So cool! Way to go, science!!
Check out the video (above) to hear how the researchers didn't even know what they had at first!
