Such an inspiring story!
And yet it easily could've been one of heartbreak!
When a dog named Charlie saved her family from a group of intruders, the family of the beloved dog were shocked to learn that they could not afford the surgery necessary to save the life of the pup.
"If Charlie had not taken the bullet, it would have hit one of my children."
But the family had to surrender the pup to police who subsequently took the canine to the North Central Shelter. The reason they had to surrender the dog was because the surgery to save Charlie's life was estimated to cost about $3,000 — way above the means of the limited income family.
Fortunately the North Central Shelter North Central Shelter Intervention Program helped the owners set up a crowdfunding campaign. The money started rolling in once the the Bill Foundation dog rescue organization got into the act. They wrote:
"With surgery costing over $3000, it's more than the Intervention Program has available. But imagine if each of us just donated $1. Heck, we only need 5 percent of our village to donate $1. Then, Charlie could receive surgery and this little hero could be reunited and live happily ever after."
Well, they reached their goal and more! According to their fundraising website, over $8,000 has been donated already, and there's still three days to go!
Charlie had her surgery recently, and it went VERY well. She had to have one of her legs amputated, but her overall health is very good. The NCSIP wrote:
"Charlie did great during her surgery. She is spending two nights at [Animal Specialty and Emergency Center] after her surgery and will be going home with her owners tomorrow. We are so sorry she is losing the leg but countless dogs live regular lives on only three."
Charlie is set to return home soon, but if you feel the need to donate to this worthwhile cause, you wouldn't be alone!
