AWFUL! Iraq War Vet Might Lose His Pet Ducks Even Though They Help With His PTSD!

army vet might lose his therapy ducks sad

Darin Welker, 36, is an Army vet who suffers from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

What helps him get by? His 14 pet "therapy ducks" who live in a penned-in area of his backyard, next to a kiddie pool for swimming.

When serving, Welker suffered a major back injury that required surgery in 2012. The V.A. paid for the surgery but wouldn't pay for physical therapy or counseling.

So it's his ducks that give him a reason to get out of bed each day, keeping him active. It's his ducks that help keep his depression and PTSD at bay.

Welker lives in West Lafayette, Ohio, where residents aren't allowed to keep fowls or other farm animals.

He's already paid a $150 fine for owning the ducks, now he's due in court after failing to comply to his original misdemeanor charge.

He's going to appear in Coshocton Municipal Court and plead his case, his only help coming from a letter from the V.A.'s mental health department recommending he be allowed to keep the ducks.

We really realllllly hope this judge sees the light and allows this man to keep his pet ducks! They're all he's got!!

Thank you for sharing that article. Seems tragic, to say the least. My prayers are with him.

All he needs to do is officially get them registered as therapy pets. Can download forms online!!! They will not be able to deny him having the pets, but may impose deposit or other fines. PTSD is no laughing matter. This is a very real and serious illness. My son served in Iraq and was wounded and has PTSD. Hell within hell!!! We need to all support these soldiers when they come home. Shame of this Home Owners Assoc. Take it out of your A#$.

First of all, thank you for your service. I'm sorry you have not received the care you need and deserve. Those are not ducks, they are geese…14 of them would be very loud. If I was a neighbor I would say yes to keeping them, if he keeps them in his house as pets and I couldn't hear them. When I said they are loud, I mean really loud.

Re: michellt – Thanks I thought they looked like geese as well. Hope he can keep them although 14 seems excessive.

There's hope on this case as I am a veteran. He needs to file for SSDI & then sue the SOB's since the ducks are considered therapy. I read something similar like this in readers digest about a gal being evicting for getting a dog and she had that condition associated with depression SAD where she got benefits. She sued the apartment and won herself some big bucks.
Shame on them for picking on a veteran!! If it wouldn't be for us veterans, would you live in a free country? We put our life on the line for our country..come on give the guy a break and let him have his ducks! I don't know what I would do if I didn't have my pesky little Bassett hound that I adore so much!

If you can keep a yappy Chihuahua than let this man keep his ducks. Anyways, if they are official therapy animals I dont believe they can make him get rid of them. Period.
