PETA Wants Disney To Change The Ending To Their Live-Action Dumbo Remake!

| Filed under: Film FlickersDisneyAnimal RightsElephantsAnimal Cruelty

dumbo elephant crying sad ending

When it comes to animals, no matter how good things get, they're rarely good enough.

And that's why PETA has felt the need to step in and remind us of the fact that animals often get the short end of the stick, even under the best circumstances.

Just like with Disney's live-action remake of Dumbo!

Everyone can get excited over the fact that Disney isn't using real animals in the movie. That's an amazing, progressive step forward for the film industry.

But that doesn't change the fact that the Dumbo story ends with him becoming a star attraction at the circus.

While it's a happy ending, in real life, an elephant ending up at a circus is never happy.

A PETA spokesperson said:

"Walt Disney Pictures has already pledged that its new version of Dumbo will use advanced computer graphics, and not a suffering captive elephant, to portray its title character, and PETA, whose motto says, in part, that 'animals are not ours to use for entertainment,' has another suggestion for the film – in addition to staying true to Dumbo's honest depiction of how animals suffer in the circus, why not change the ending so that Dumbo escapes to an elephant sanctuary?"

That sounds like a real, modern happy ending!

We're not sure how willing Disney would be to budge on changing a classic story's ending.

But at least PETA is always fighting for animal rights, hopefully they'll inspire others to do the same.

Save the elephants!

I think it is a great idea. It's time we stopped using animals for entertainment.

Re: carolina – Sorry, people should not be allowed to abuse animals without some sort of outcry. How is PETA supposed to protect animals quietly? Attitudes need to change - that takes a bit of public awareness.

The last time I looked there were 6 elephants in the animated version (including Dumbo and his mother). Is it just going to be Dumbo that escapes? Are they suggesting that all 6 elephants should somehow manage to walk off and find a sanctuary?

    Part I of comment

There is a podcast I listen to. It is Disney Story Origins . The host will take Disney films and will look at them, the original versions of the story, and other versions of it that have been made over the years to tell how the story has changed,.

I just listened to the podcast about the 1998 film Mulan and I saw how many times that story got changed over the years by the person telling the story to highlight different part of the message that they wanted to convey to their their audience . The thing that surprised me the most was that the Disney version that I am familiar with was all about girl empowerment but the original version were for men fighting in the military. The original story showed the men look at what this little girl is doing and you better start fighting so she does not show you up.

    Part 2 of comment

So there have been many times when Disney has changed the story to fit their audience or the times. The thing is they are not the only "story teller to do that.

Disney is in the market of telling stories that will appeal to the most amount of people. When Dumbo was made in 1941 we did not know of the horrors that happened behind closed doors at circuses and the end of the story was acceptable for that time and the audience of that time.

It is now 2014. The public (or a large segment) now know what happens at circuses with all the abuse of their performers and that the story has reflect the changes in public attitudes towards circuses. I hope Disney is smart enough to test this film in audiences and listen to it's consumers in social media.

Re: MJaded – Yes, why not. How great would it be if all the elephants escaped the circus. Why indoctrinate a whole generation of people/children to thinking that circuses area good thing for the animals? What a wasted opportunity to both tell a story and do some good.
