It's been a heavy year for Mike Shinoda.

The Linkin Park vocalist sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss his first ever solo-album Post-Traumatic, in which he details the struggles he's gone through since his bandmate Chester Bennington died by suicide last July.

Though he says the album isn't entirely entirely about Bennington, most of Shinoda's songs explore the challenges he's had in trying to understand himself without his larger-than-life friend by his side.

Depression is an asshole.

If you're going through it, just know that you're not alone — many artists have struggled with their mental health, too.

Bands like Paramore, Green Day, and Twenty One Pilots have all written great (surprisingly upbeat) music to make sense of and overcome their demons.

Sadly, not every musician on our list won their battles with depression, but they all helped listeners gain a better understanding of their own darker thoughts.
