This gurl is more than a pair of sultry, swinging hips!
Shakira, an advocate of investing in Latino education, got her chance to to speak with government officials on the issue during a meeting of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics Commission.
That platform also gave her the opportunity to plead her case to millions of Americans on behalf of the fastest-growing group of Americans who have more children living in poverty than ANY OTHER ethnic group.
In an editorial authored by the Colombian pop star on the White House blog, Shakira argues “the only road out of poverty is education.”
Since Latinos in America “disproportionately drop out of school and far too few finish college”, she asserts:
“Investing in the educational achievement of this vulnerable population will not only help determine the economic future and competitiveness of this nation, but can serve as a model for the world”
She isn’t new to this issue either. In fact, the 34-year-old has been working with underprivileged Latino youth for 15 years!
Her goal is to focus on improving the minds of Latino youth at an early age in order to create a smaller achievement gap between Latino and White students.
The opinion is based on studies that show the largest predictor of high school educational achievement is academic skill level upon entry into kindergarten.
In the end, she believes that improving the education of latinos can only help improve our struggling economy, writing:
“As the Latino population grows, the U.S. economy becomes more and more dependent on its success. There is no doubt that the future of the United States is inextricably tied to the future of the Latino community here and the education of its youth.”
Wow! We’re impressed and can’t really argue with that!
Although, we can add that if EVERY child — regardless of race or circumstance — is better educated, than they’ll have a brighter future and so will this country!
