They’re not sure why, but a group of researchers have found that eating dark chocolate has slight benefits for your heart health, including lowering your blood pressure, better blood vessel function, and lowering insulin levels.
The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, used data from 42 small clinical trials with about 1,300 participants to determine their findings. Lead researcher Lee Hooper explained to sources:
“My take-away message would be that if people like dark chocolate, then eating a little in place of other ‘treat’ foods is fine, and may be beneficial. However, the evidence is not yet good enough to suggest that we should all be doing this.”
Don’t go pigging out on chocolate just yet, though. The research team points out that it could take several hundred calories worth of the candy to have any beneficial effect on the heart, which would NOT be good for the rest of your body. They also couldn’t determine chocolates effect on the risk of stroke or heart attack.
For now, keep eating what your eating and take comfort that it MIGHT have some healthy benefits for your heart, but don’t use this research as an excuse to eat 3 chocolate bars a day.
